We, the undersigned organizations, underline that the state ignored the UN recommended selection procedure when selecting the candidate for the CRC membership and nominated Ms. Sopio Kiladze who does not represent for strong belief and respect for equality and human rights.

The Public Defender of Georgia has reviewed the cases of five trans* persons, who applied to the PDO in 2018 and whose interests were represented by the Women’s Initiatives Supporting Group (WISG). The applicants maintained that the unsubstantiated rejection of the Referral Commission to finance their diagnostic procedures constituted discrimination on grounds of gender identity.

We continue our work having mobilized our efforts to the maximum possible extent and do not intend to give up our position in order to conform to an agenda forged by various politically inclined groups. We thus consider it essential to publicly challenge these counterproductive measures and assess current developments.

Structural and systemic homo/bi/transphobia, which reproduces these attitudes on a societal level, has for many years been manifested by the state in a lack of political will to alter the heavy legacy of negative attitudes towards queer people and develop a progressive social policy oriented towards the elimination of SOGI-based discrimination and related economic, employment, and healthcare inequalities.

Human’s equal right and equal access to primary social benefits, such as health care, education, right to decent labour and wages, is the very essential bases on which the state organization for the long-term socio-economic welfare might stand upon. Only this can be a real alternative to the inequality-producing economic and political system, which has most acutely shown its own "vulnerability" during the virus-related crisis. The situation caused by Covid-19 pandemic reveals the need for fundamental political and social changes.

A Transgender Solidarity Group has been formed as a result of joint initiative of queer activists and citizens. The group aims to raise funds for critical needs of the trans community in Georgia, amid the COVID-19 pandemic-related state of emergency situation. Facing the given circumstances, transgender sex-workers and transgender community in general remain a highly vulnerable group, as the State continues to carry zero effective policies in regards of improving access to housing, employment, and health services for Trans persons.
